International giving
Coming soonDonorCARE is MYR-only today. An overseas donor can still give.
Every money table in DonorCARE already has a currency column — it defaults to MYR everywhere, because the payment gateway and the LHDN e-invoicing it feeds both run in ringgit. An overseas donor can already pay by international card and be receipted in MYR. Multi-currency display and settlement are ahead, with no date attached.
Why MYR, specifically
The data model has the seat. The write path doesn't use it yet.
Donations, orders, campaign donation items, campaign rituals, MyInvois submissions, and bank statement records all carry a currency column, and every organisation record carries a currency code and locale. None of that is missing. What's missing is that every call site that writes a money value hardcodes MYR rather than reading the column back.
- currency column on donations, orders, and related money tables, defaulting to MYR
- currency_code and currency_locale already on the organisation record
- The gap is the write path, not the schema
The two things that pin it to MYR
CHIP settles in ringgit, and LHDN expects ringgit
CHIP, DonorCARE's payment gateway, settles through Malaysian rails — FPX, DuitNow QR, cards, and e-wallets, all in MYR. LHDN's MyInvois e-invoicing then expects MYR on the tax fields, so a receipt in another currency can't be filed as a Malaysian e-invoice as things stand today.
- CHIP settlement: FPX, DuitNow QR, cards, e-wallets — Malaysian rails, MYR
- LHDN MyInvois tax fields expect MYR
- A non-MYR receipt cannot be filed as an e-invoice today
What works right now
An overseas donor can give today — through their own bank's conversion
A donor outside Malaysia can pay with an international card through CHIP. Their own bank converts the charge; DonorCARE records and receipts the gift in MYR. Malaysian tax deductibility under s44(6) is a matter for Malaysian taxpayers regardless of the donor's currency, so a foreign donor's receipt is a record of the gift, not a foreign tax document.
- International cards work through CHIP today
- The donor's bank handles the conversion, not DonorCARE
- The gift is recorded and receipted in MYR
What DonorCARE does not do
No foreign-jurisdiction tax paperwork, and none planned
DonorCARE does not issue a US 501(c)(3) donation letter, UK Gift Aid documentation, or any other country's tax-deduction paperwork, and there's no plan to. A receipt from DonorCARE is a Malaysian record under s44(6) where applicable — not a substitute for another country's tax form.
The concrete plan
A second gateway, not a multi-currency CHIP
DonorCARE's own Integrations screen already names the plan: Stripe, listed coming soon, as a second payment gateway alongside CHIP. Stripe's own reach — 135+ currencies, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link, plus its fraud protection — is what brings multi-currency in, rather than CHIP's Malaysian rails growing a currency picker.
- Stripe: coming soon, listed in DonorCARE's own Integrations screen
- 135+ currencies, global reach
- A second gateway alongside CHIP, not a CHIP upgrade
MYR today, multi-currency ahead — no date
Nothing here is hidden behind a flag waiting to be flipped. The schema is ready; the write path, the gateway, and the statutory filing all still assume MYR.
What an overseas donor can do today
- Give with an international card
- CHIP accepts international cards; the donor's own bank converts the charge.
- Receive a receipt
- The gift is recorded and receipted in MYR, as a record of the donation.
Stripe — a second gateway, for multi-currency
Listed coming soon in DonorCARE's own Integrations screen today. No date implied.
- 135+ currencies, global reach
- Stripe's own stated coverage — the route to multi-currency is a second gateway alongside CHIP, not a currency picker bolted onto CHIP's Malaysian rails.
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link
- Wallets CHIP doesn't carry today, on Stripe's own checkout.
- Reading the currency column back
- The schema already carries a currency per organisation and per money row — the write path needs to use it once a second gateway exists to settle in it.
- FX-converted gift against a MYR receipt
- Correctly handling a gift settled in another currency against a receipt still denominated in MYR for LHDN purposes.
Frequently asked questions
Can a donor outside Malaysia give through DonorCARE?
Yes. They pay with an international card through CHIP, their bank converts the charge, and the gift is recorded and receipted in MYR.
Will my overseas donor get a tax receipt for their own country?
No. DonorCARE issues Malaysian receipts under s44(6) where applicable, not foreign tax paperwork — no US 501(c)(3) letter, no UK Gift Aid documentation. That isn't planned.
Why is DonorCARE MYR-only if the database already has a currency column?
The schema has the seat, but the write path hardcodes MYR at every call site, and the two systems downstream of it — CHIP settlement and LHDN MyInvois filing — both run in ringgit today.
When will multi-currency support ship?
We're not giving it a date. The named plan, already listed coming soon in our own Integrations screen, is Stripe as a second payment gateway alongside CHIP.
Will Stripe make CHIP itself handle other currencies?
No. The plan is a second gateway, not a CHIP upgrade — Stripe settles internationally with its own 135+ currencies, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link, running alongside CHIP's Malaysian rails rather than replacing them.
Does an FX-converted gift cause a problem with the receipt?
Not for the donor's own tax purposes today, since deductibility runs through Malaysian tax law regardless of the giving currency. Correctly reconciling a gift settled in another currency against a MYR-denominated receipt is part of the work still ahead. This is a payments question, not a CARE-suite one — see /features/care-suite for the sibling-app roadmap instead.
Accept a gift from anywhere, receipted in MYR
International cards work through CHIP today. Multi-currency display and settlement are ahead.
